Optometrists in the VCU Department of Ophthalmology provide comprehensive eye exams for patients of all ages as well as training for residents. Through thorough ocular health assessments, we screen for eye conditions such as amblyopia, glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts, and monitor for ophthalmic manifestations of systemic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV and autoimmune conditions.
Our team also specializes in complex refractions and medically necessary contacts lens fittings. Many of our patients suffer from eye conditions that cause distorted vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or conventional soft contact lenses, such as:
For these patients, we design and prescribe custom, often rigid gas permeable contact lenses so that they can achieve functional vision.
Residents will learn the principles, instruments and methods of retinoscopy and refraction through lectures and hands-on workshops. Rotations through the Optometry service will provide experience fitting and prescribing both cosmetic and medically necessary contact lenses.Learn more about our residency program
