About us

The VCU Office of Sustainability’s mission is to be mindful stewards of our diverse human and natural environments through education, innovation, collaboration and engagement. The office strives to foster a multi-faceted culture of sustainability through the responsible use of resources and continuous advocacy for the Richmond community. To support VCU sustainability initiatives, a staff of certified professionals oversees the university’s sustainability programs and makes up the VCU Sustainability Committee.

On both campuses, the office is working to reduce emissions in all areas of campus life, from educational programs and facilities to dining and residential life. As a part of these efforts, Sustainability aims to help the university become climate-neutral by 2050.

VCU has also partnered with a variety of environmental groups to champion the importance of sustainable facilities in higher education. VCU is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Also, in April 2008, the university, along with more than 600 universities, signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. In addition, in March 2018, VCU was rated Silver in the AASHE Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System—review VCU’s STARS report on the AASHE website. VCU also has a number of green buildings, including Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings, sustainable residence halls, and green roofs

The Office of Sustainability also provides resources and oversees services available to VCU students, staff, faculty and the community, such as the VCU Free Store, community and learning gardens, and single stream recycling.
