  • Oral Health Equity

    Purpose of core: This core seeks to identify and remove the educational, political, psychological, social and nutritional barriers to the prevention and treatment of dental carries (tooth decay) in the children and adolescents of Richmond.

  • Sustainable Food Access

    Purpose of core: The Sustainable Food Access Transdisciplinary Core invests in ‘smart city’ research, which embeds advances in technology and data collection into the infrastructures of urban environments. Through converging research, the core will initially examine the conceptual relationship between governance, urban food, communities, technology, and social innovation. It will promote diversity in all its forms, and further collaborative knowledge generation that enhances urban communities.

  • Intersections in the Lives of LGBTQIA+ Communities

    Purpose of core: The Intersections in the Lives of LGBTQIA+ Communities Transdisciplinary Core engages in community-informed inquiry of LGBTQIA+ people with multiple marginalized identities in Richmond. It explores the experiences and effects of discrimination as well as strategies for resilience and resistance. The core also aspires to further an inclusive environment in which faculty, students, and community members, including those from historically underrepresented groups, contribute towards meaningful change.

  • Urban Education and Family

    Purpose of core: We propose a holistic strategy to improving education equity for Black and Latinx children and families using the following models for research, teaching, and service: 1) Model for PK-20 Educator Development; 2) Model for Reducing Access Gaps and Barriers to Educational Excellence through Policy; and 3) Model for Family and Community Engagement.

  • Disrupting Criminalization in Education

    Purpose of core: This core aims to promote educational excellence through examining the criminalization of trauma and exclusionary discipline that prevent African American and Latinx children from engaging in learning. Ultimately, it will further collaborative knowledge generation that enhances diverse urban communities.

  • Health and Wellness in Aging Populations

    Purpose of core: This core addresses problems of older and disabled adults “aging in place” within low-income senior housing apartment buildings and surrounding neighborhoods in urban Richmond, Virginia.

    Purpose of core: This core addresses how culture and race/ethnicity impact health and overall well-being, in particular among the citizens of the Crater Health District in Petersburg, Virginia, experiencing health disparities.
