Health and Wellness in Aging Populations

 

The Health and Wellness in Aging Populations Transdisciplinary Core addresses problems of older and disabled adults “aging in place” within low-income senior housing apartment buildings and surrounding neighborhoods in urban Richmond, Virginia. Many of the issues impacting the health and welfare of this primarily African-American population are related to social determinants of health and health disparities.

Enhancing the daily social and health aspects of older adults
This core focuses on the development of an interprofessional education and collaborative care practice model providing enhanced care coordination, education, medication and chronic disease counseling within senior apartment buildings in Richmond.

    • Parsons is responsible for leading the overall team effort. She brings expertise in primary care, interprofessional team development and geriatrics to the work of the core.

    • Price will focus on personalized medicine and pharmacogenetics research within underserved populations.  He is a clinician scientist with interests in improving the pharmacotherapeutic outcomes associated with treating chronic diseases in older adults.

    • As a new faculty member, Battle's research is evolving to explore the concept of resilience in marginalized populations promoting health equity by addressing Social Determinants of Health. Battle is interested in developing and evaluating interprofessional education models.

    • Chung brings expertise in the areas of health informatics, minority aging and community-based prevention research. She is a gerontechnologist with interests in the use of information technologies to improve functional health outcomes and promote healthy aging in older adults.

    • Assistant Professor, Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, School of Nursing
    • Diallo's doctoral research focused on the management of infectious diseases through healthcare providers’ prescribing behaviors and exploring alternative approach to support a faster, cheaper and more precise technology to detected infectious pathogens at the point-of-need. As a nurse scientist and former clinical and translational post-doctoral fellow at the NIH, Diallo will bring expertise to the core in translational science, community-based research development and data management.

    • Gendron is responsible for ensuring the application of gerontological principles in the core’s education and service-delivery activities. She brings expertise in gerontology, psychology, optimal aging and community-based programs to the work of the core.

    • Falls brings her expertise in adult care for chronic disease management, transitions of care, and social determinants of health to this interprofessional group. Her scholarship has focused on understanding food insecurity as a way to address chronic disease management and improve quality of life. Falls works directly with students teaching about the life experience of low-income older adults and how that impacts health outcomes throughout a continuum of care.

    • Hung brings expertise in the areas of needs assessment, program evaluation, and health disparities research. She is an AARP project evaluator.

    • Post-doctoral Research Fellow, School of Pharmacy
    • Mackiewicz, brings expertise in the areas of geriatrics with a concentration on community based, multi-disciplinary care-coordination with low-income, urban dwelling older adults. Under the mentorship of Dr. Price, she will focus on improving overall wellness and health outcomes for older adult populations in the community setting as well as increasing the awareness, knowledge and use of pharmcogenetic research in underserved populations.

    • Assistant Professor, Division of Epidemiology, Department of Family Medicine and Population Health, School of Medicine
    • Prom-Wormley brings expertise in the areas of genetic epidemiology of smoking as well as family history within a community-engaged setting. As a member of this iCubed core, she will focus on the analysis of survey data from older adults living in the East End of Richmond.

    • Sargent will focus on research to improve physical function and cognitive health outcomes for underserved older adults. As a clinician scientist and former NIH/NIA fellow she brings clinical expertise and unique skills in supervised machine learning and bioinformatics.

    • Associate Director, Virginia Center on Aging, College of Health Professions
    • Dr. Waters serves as Associate Director for the Virginia Geriatric Education Center's Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), which funds initiatives for core team members. Dr. Waters' research interests include geriatrics workforce development, geriatrics education, health promotion, and wellness.

    • Winship brings expertise in community-engaged research and qualitative methodologies. Her research focuses on interprofessional, community-based interventions to support health, wellness, and functional independence in low-income older adult populations. As an occupational therapist, she is interested in the emerging field of OT in primary care and ways that occupation-centered goal setting can support behavior change.

    • Zanjani will focus on research development and evidence-based community programing within gerontological, public health, and behavioral health principles. She brings expertise in human development, health behaviors, mental health/substance misuse, and community intervention research contexts to the existing work of the core.
