This course is designed for academic and administrative leaders seeking to cultivate ideas, skills, and strategies for building an inclusive learning environment, e.g., implementing practices where ALL students/learners are valued, a diversity of learning preferences are considered and enable participation, and barriers to learning are removed.
This online leadership certificate course is designed to develop leadership competencies in the areas of healthcare biases and a health equity framework, as they apply to issues of workforce diversity, education, hiring and retention; patient-centered outcomes and the provision of health care; and the development of policies and programs to promote diversity and inclusion.
Whether individuals go above and beyond in their work role depends on how empowered they are and whether they feel their unique strengths and experiences are being leveraged and utilized. This course will specifically focus on the ways in which leaders can create such environments through the facilitation of practices, procedures, and policies which bring about a more diverse and inclusive work environment.
Fundamentals of Diversity and Inclusion provides an overview of the most recent and compelling developments in the field of diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the workplace. This course aims to improve leaders’ understanding of D&I by providing definitions, strategies and activities that ultimately will strengthen their confidence in addressing present and future needs of their organization.
This course contributes to diversity and inclusion education by providing participants with foundational knowledge and skills for reducing implicit biases and microaggressions. Four weekly modules provide opportunities for participants to gain awareness and knowledge, and analyze and evaluate situations involving implicit bias and microaggressions.
Effective teamwork requires that each individual in the diverse team feels valued, included, and able to contribute in a psychologically-safe way. Anticipating and solving the problems of today and tomorrow in our organizations requires that individuals work well in teams and that the experience of working in teams is life-giving rather than life-depleting to ensure high levels of well-being rather than burnout and disengagement.
Leaders are in the unique position to leverage their power to make a difference and truly build an inclusive community. Advanced concepts will be presented as the learner consolidates prior learning to further develop key leadership skills required to nurture an inclusive community in their workplace. The purpose of this 45-minute didactic seminar is to raise awareness of health inequities, including local and historical data, and the VCU Health Equity initiative. The seminar is intended to equip participants with a baseline level of awareness that can inform their future engagement relative to their interests or expertise.
This 90-minute seminar is designed to increase understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity concepts and the practices that sustain them. Learning outcomes include tools for scanning power dynamics in the environment, setting inclusion-related goals for each level within the system and incorporating actionable practices toward creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment.
The purpose of this seminar is to deconstruct prevailing social, economic, political, and historical factors that limit the framing of disability within the realms of compliance and legal obligation in the context of higher education.
Through case studies and discussion, participants will evaluate the resources available at VCU, explore best practices, assess practical considerations, and develop strategies for accommodating a wide range of disabilities.
This 90-minute experiential seminar will cover the basics of population size, appropriate terminology (including people-first vs. identity-first language), personal disclosures of barriers, and key accessibility issues at VCU and in the surrounding community.

This personally transformative training program will approach the intertwined topics of ageism, adultism, and ableism from the perspective of the intersectional self, based on cutting edge empirical research by VCU faculty in the Gerontology Department (Gendron, Inker & Welleford, 2017). The outcome of the training will be a strengthened ability to act as an age ally within and beyond the workplace in the creation of a more just society.
In increasingly diverse workplaces, intercultural conflicts may arise and are often related to lack of awareness of differences, power and privilege in hierarchical relationships, differences in verbal and non-verbal communication and misinterpretation. Through critical reflection, group dialogue, and interactive theater and role play activities, this training provides opportunities for participants to generate and rehearse responses to challenging situations related to intercultural conflict.
Led by RIC champions, this workshop helps participants understand the relevant policies, practices and resources related to the VCU recruitment and interview process, and the unique role of RIC representatives and human resource professionals. Participants will learn about the role of implicit bias and the impact of structural and institutional policies on recruitment, application review, and the interview process. Often there is little time to craft an overall recruitment process that effectively attracts qualified diverse candidates, so this workshop can help participants to better be prepared.
The Immunity to Change (ITC) workshops help units discover why change can be difficult by illuminating hidden barriers to change within us. Immunities to change may also make it difficult to deal optimally with a crisis, like the one we are currently facing. The ITC workshops are conducted online by trained facilitators, and teams can use new insights to identify actionable strategies to recruit, retain, and advance a diverse workforce at VCU, especially during unusually challenging times.
