Derek Leiner grew up in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains near Roanoke, Virginia. He attended University of Virginia where he majored in biomedical engineering. He subsequently joined the faculty at the McGuire VA Hospital as an academic hospitalist. He also became an Associate Program Director for the VCU Internal Medicine program overseeing the quality, safety, and performance improvement. He serves as the chair of the Patient Safety Committee at the VA. His academic interests include curricular development and innovation, especially related to safety culture, housestaff psychological safety in medical error, and collaborative care. He is the faculty mentor of the IM Resident QI Council.
Outside of work, Derek enjoys mindfulness practice, traveling, hiking around Richmond and the James River with his two dogs, and trying to bake the most creative things from British Baking Show. Derek and his spouse live on the south side of Richmond. They welcomed a son in March 2019.
