Overview

About the division of Multiple Sclerosis and General Neurology

The Division of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and General Neurology includes faculty and advanced practice providers focused on the care and management of autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system including multiple sclerosis, as well as those with other common neurological disorders including headache and memory disorders.

The division is home to a fellowship in multiple sclerosis and numerous funded research projects including clinical trials for MS and headache.

Research

Research within the Division of Multiple Sclerosis and General Neurology

Neuroscientists at VCU are engaged in a wide spectrum of basic, translational and clinical research projects focused on understanding the underlying cause of MS and identifying potential therapies. Projects in recent years include:

  • The discovery of a form of axonal injury in animal models of multiple sclerosis that may revolutionize our understanding of axonal injury in multiple sclerosis
  • The study of how nociceptin and mu-opioid receptors control remyelination
  • The examination of how autotaxinpromotes remyelination through its action on oligodendrocyte progenitor cells
  • The study of serum biomarkers in MS
  • The testing of LXR agonists to reduce inflammation in the central nervous system

Education

Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis Fellowship

The Division of Multiple Sclerosis and General Neurology offers one-year and two-year fellowship positions in multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology.

Fellows will train in both the inpatient and outpatient care and management of MS and MS-related disorders, as well as participate in MS therapeutic trials and other clinical research. MS and MS-related disorders require multidisciplinary care, and thus fellows will have the opportunity to work with our colleagues in fields such as physical medicine and rehabilitation, urology, ophthalmology and neuroradiology.Learn more about the fellowship program
