Upcoming gubernatorial rally and impacts to VCU

This Saturday, Oct. 23, the student organization Young Democrats at VCU, in partnership with one of Virginia’s gubernatorial candidates, former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, will host a rally on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus.

This Saturday, Oct. 23, the student organization Young Democrats at VCU, in partnership with one of Virginia’s gubernatorial candidates, former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, will host a rally on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus. 

This event will be located on the Compass and will include President Barack Obama. The organizers are requiring tickets for entry. This is not a university-sponsored event and VCU is not responsible for the distribution of tickets.

Students, faculty and staff should be aware that this event will result in operational impacts to the Monroe Park Campus, to include the closure of select facilities.
 

Facilities
 

  • James Branch Cabell Library (901 Park Ave.) will be closed prior to and during the event on Saturday. The building will be open afterwards from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., alternative study spaces have been reserved on the first floor of the Academic Learning Commons (MCALC). Students should enter the building through the entrance on 1000 Floyd Ave. Cabell Starbucks will be closed on Oct. 23.
  • Hibbs Hall will be closed and events have been relocated to alternate locations.
  • Shafer Court Dining Center and Market 810 (810 Cathedral Pl.) will be closed on Oct. 23. As an alternative, VCU Dine will extend the hours for AVO Kitchen (355 W. Cary Street) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Subscribers to VCU’s West Main Street Parking Deck (801 W. Main St.) and West Cary Street Parking Deck (1201 W. Cary St.) will be able to access the decks. On Oct. 23, these decks will have online and on-site payment options in connection with the campaign event.
     

No parking zones and street closures
 

On Oct. 23 there will be no public parking in the following on-street locations from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

  • 1000 block of Grove Avenue (both sides), between N. Harrison and N. Linden streets
  • 900 block of Park Avenue (both sides), between N. Harrison and N. Linden streets
  • 00 block of N. Harrison Street (both sides), between Park Avenue and W. Main Street
  • 00 block of S. Harrison Street (both sides) between W. Main Street and Cary Street
  • 800 to 900 blocks of W. Franklin Street (both sides), between N. Harrison and N. Laurel streets
  • Cathedral, N. Cathedral and S. Cathedral Place
     

The following streets will be closed to public traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 23:
 

  • 900 block of Park Avenue
  • 1000 block of Grove Avenue
  • Cathedral, N. Cathedral and S. Cathedral Place
  • 100 block of N. Linden Street
     

As with any large events on VCU’s campuses, VCU Police and university leadership are coordinating plans with all law enforcement partners to keep community members safe. In the event of an emergency, VCU will utilize the VCU Alert system. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up for VCU Alerts: https://alert.vcu.edu/signup/.
