SON Intramural Grant Program (IGP) Opportunities

The School of Nursing (SON) Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation (ORSI) administer four different intramural funding opportunities for faculty research and non-research scholarship under the intramural grant program (IGP). Each opportunity has a particular purpose, sponsor, maximum award amount, eligibility requirements, due date/timeline, and review process. All applications are submitted using ORSI’s pre-award personnel and processes, and if funded, are managed by ORSI’s post-award personnel and processes. If you have interest in applying, please notify your department chair and submit a Notice of Intent to our office.

 

Research-Intramural Grants

Research Development Grant

PURPOSE:   The research development grant was established by ORSI to assist faculty members in developing and executing pilot studies that will lead directly to external research grant applications and awards. This award is open to all faculty members who wish to submit a pilot study application with a focus in any aspect of biobehavioral or health systems science research. A key component of the application is a discussion of how the results of the proposed pilot study will lead directly to at least one subsequent external peer-reviewed research grant application with a detailed timeline and deliverables. Applicants must identify a specific extramural sponsor, funding mechanism, and due date. Examples of appropriate projects for this grant include, but are not limited to, analysis of data to determine sample eligibility and/or availability, feasibility testing of proposed methods, and/or analysis of biomarkers. The maximum award amount varies each year, but generally does not exceed $15,000. Awards up to 20,000 may be awarded for research teams that propose a line of research that is in line with the current research strategic plan of the SON, depending upon availability of funds.  The funding period is for one year.

ELIGIBILITY:  All full-time SON faculty members are eligible to apply, regardless of rank or tenure status. Eligible faculty members may be a Principal Investigator on up to two annual research awards within a four-year period. Priority is given to faculty who have no other immediate source of pilot money such as start-up funds or F&A index or to newly established teams incorporating a priority area of research consistent with the research strategic plan of the SON. All applicants should discuss their applications with their Department Chairs prior to emailing SONOR@vcu.edu to set up a pre-award meeting.

*Submissions will be accepted every fall semester with additional applications accepted in the spring semester if funds allow.

Research Supplement IGP Fund

PURPOSE: This funding mechanism was established by ORSI to assist faculty members in completing discrete projects that require a small amount of money and are necessary as preliminary work for an extramural research grant application or toward a research product that will support future funding or research goals.  Examples include but are not limited to additional or secondary data analyses, specific protocol changes, participant incentives, marketing, or limited personnel additions to an existing project.  Award amount is $1,000 with the possibility of up to $2,000 with additional justification and availability of funds.  The funding period is for six to nine months.  Due to the urgent or timely nature of these limited use funds, the applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.  Please check with ORSI to ensure that funds are available before developing the application.

ELIGIBILITY:  All full-time SON faculty members are eligible to apply, regardless of rank or tenure status.  Eligible faculty members must have a specific extramural research grant application planned in the next 9-12 months.  Faculty may receive a maximum of one Supplemental Fund IGP per academic year.  All applicants should discuss their applications with their Department Chairs prior to emailing SONOR@vcu.edu to set up a pre-award meeting.

Sarah P. Farrell Legacy Research Endowment Fund

PURPOSE:  The VCU School of Nursing Sarah P. Farrell Legacy Research Endowment Fund is made possible through the contributions of Sarah P. Farrell. The award is made to provide opportunities for research or scholarship support. This year, the award is for up to $1,136.  The funding period is for one year.  This funding mechanism offers direct cost funds to meritorious project(s), with the number of funded projects depending on the number of proposals and availability of funds. The focus is to support research by School of Nursing Ph.D. students in their dissertation phase or pilot research projects by tenure-track or tenured faculty members in the School of Nursing. The funds may be used to support ongoing research projects needing additional support to complete a portion of the research, add a needed aim to an ongoing project, or to propose a new small project

SPONSOR:  SON ORSI

ELIGIBILITY:  The Sarah P. Farrell Legacy Research Endowment is open to School of Nursing (SON) Ph.D. students in their dissertation phase or pilot research projects by tenure-track or tenured faculty members.  Faculty with funded projects may reapply for continued funding in additional years. Each submission will compete with all other applicants in that new cycle, thus continued funding is not automatically guaranteed. 

Ph.D. students or faculty who decide to apply should discuss their ideas with their dissertation committee chair or Department Chair and then email SONOR@vcu.edu to set up a pre-award meeting. Connecting with the SON Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation (ORSI) as early as possible is essential in developing an appropriate budget and scope of work for the project.

Non-Research Scholarly Grants Program: 

 

Annual Clinical Scholars Program Award

PURPOSE:  Made possible through donor contributions, this annual award was created to provide opportunities for projects involving clinical practice, teaching, and faculty development. It is intended to support non-research scholarship activities. Although project directors should only request what is justifiably needed, the maximum request generally does not exceed $15,000. The funding period is for one year.

SPONSOR:  SON Clinical Scholars Program Award (via the SON Development Office/ORSI)

ELIGIBILITY:  The chosen Scholar(s) will be School of Nursing (SON) term faculty member(s). Full-time term faculty members are given priority, but part-time or adjunct clinical faculty working at VCU Health or teaching a clinical course will be considered. Funding is not intended to support pilot work for a dissertation, rather, the goal is to support clinical practice or education projects that enhance the teaching of nursing practice. Preference is given to a faculty member who is actively engaged in clinical practice and/or teaching. All applicants should discuss their applications with their Department Chairs prior to emailing SONOR@vcu.edu to set up a pre-award meeting. Connecting with the SON Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation as early as possible is essential in developing an appropriate budget and scope of work for the project.

SON Faculty Practice and/or Education Grant

PURPOSE:   This funding mechanism was established by the Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation (ORSI) to assist term faculty members in completing scholarly projects that require a small amount of money and will result in significant outcomes that improve teaching and/or practice. Applicants must align the project goals with their annual performance goals, identify professional development aspects of the proposed project, and describe plans for professional dissemination of outcomes. Examples include, but are not limited to, collection and analysis of teaching data to improve educational techniques or curriculum, feasibility testing of proposed innovations in practice or teaching, and/or analysis of predictors of student or teacher success.  The maximum award amount is $2,000.  Applications will be accepted once each semester including summer session (see table below).  Please check with ORSI to ensure that funds are available before developing the application.  The funding period is for nine months.

ELIGIBILITY:  All full-time SON term faculty members are eligible to apply as Principal Investigator, and may have a mixture of term and tenure track faculty on the project team. Faculty may receive a maximum of one Practice and/or Education Grant per academic year.  All applicants should discuss their applications with their Department Chairs to ensure compatibility with annual performance goals prior to emailing SONOR@vcu.edu to set up a pre-award meeting.  Connecting with ORSI as early as possible is essential in developing an appropriate budget and scope of work for the project.

Annual Feierstein-Bresenoff Innovations Grant

PURPOSE:

This award will fund pilot work achieving one of the following:

  1. Testing a new model of care or enhancing a job role that would expand access to care,
  2. Improving decision-support for frontline health workers,
  3. Enhancing referrals and/or improve care coordination,
  4. Introducing a new product or technology to improve patient or community-based care, or
  5. Enhancing the design or existing technology that would improve quality and safety for stakeholders.

SPONSOR:  SON Langston Center for Innovation in Quality and Safety

ELIGIBILITY:  This grant will be awarded to a student-faculty pair. It is available to full-time and part-time students with a defined plan of study, and tenure track and term faculty (determined as at least half-time), with either taking the Principal Innovator (PI) role, and the other taking the Co-PI role. Students who apply must, at minimum, have a faculty sponsor to assume grant responsibility in the event of graduation, relocation, or other variants. Recipients are eligible to reapply for an additional innovation award upon completion of the existing award. Students should discuss their application with their faculty sponsor, and faculty should discuss their application with their Department Chair to procure support. The student-faculty pair should consult with the Langston Center Director to ensure compatibility with the Innovations Grant mechanism prior to emailing SONOR@vcu.edu to set up a pre-award meeting.

The maximum award amount may vary pending funding availability, but currently is set to $15,000. Please check with ORSI to ensure that funds are available before developing the application.
