Faculty Research Initiatives and Activities

The VCU Department of Radiology research portfolio extends from basic research to clinical trials. Radiology faculty members conduct research in a wide variety of clinical areas, including cancer treatment and diagnosis, cardiovascular disease, women’s health, trauma and obesity.

Current projects include:

• A five-year National Institutes of Health (NIH) basic research grant for the development of metallic nanoparticles.
• A NIH grant for a phase one clinical trial of a new imaging agent for identification of tumor resistance.

The phase one clinical trial demonstrates our comprehensive approach and commitment to bringing new discoveries into clinical use. Specifically, the imaging agent was developed by a VCU faculty member during a fellowship at NIH, scientists at VCU developed an automated method to produce the agent and a Massey Cancer Center grant funded the first in-human pilot study.
