Auctus: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Auctus: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creativity is student-run and peer-reviewed. Auctus accepts submissions from VCU undergraduates in all disciplines. The journal welcomes submissions of research articles, technical papers, expository articles and works of creative scholarship including visual art, music, creative writing, film and multi-media projects. Auctus is sponsored by the Honors College and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.

British Virginia

British Virginia is a series of scholarly editions of documents touching on the colony. These texts range from the 16th and 17th-century literature of English exploration to the 19th-century writing of loyalists and other Virginians who continued to identify with Great Britain. British Virginia editions appear principally in digital form, freely downloadable. The editorial offices sit appropriately at the research university nearest both the falls of the James River, and the site of the first English college planned for North America, Henricus Colledge. CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

The journal focuses on the exchange of ideas, primarily among college and university faculty from mathematics, science, and education, while incorporating the perspectives of elementary and secondary school teachers. The journal serves as an alternative voice for the field of art education through the promotion of scholarly research that addresses social issues, action, and transformation as well as creative methods of research and writing.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly (VCU University Archives)

ISSN 0025-7141 MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly, was a scientific and scholarly journal published by the School of Medicine from 1965 until 1981. Professor of Medicine Sami I. Said, who established the journal in 1965 and served as editor until 1971, designed it to be a publishing outlet for proceedings of symposia, seminars, lectures and continuing education programs sponsored by the institution. Over the course of its 15 years the journal regularly published papers from the McGuire Lecture, Stoneburner Lecture, and other continuing series at the medical school. Faculty from the School of Medicine served on the editorial board and a variety of specialists from both inside and out of the institution rotated as consulting and contributing editors. Richmond graphic artist Raymond A. Geary, a graduate of Pratt Institute, created a variety of colorful and contemporary-styled journal covers throughout the lifespan of the publication. Fairfield Goodale, chair of the Department of Pathology, assumed the role of editor following Said’s departure from Richmond. Frederick J. Spencer, chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine, took over the publication in 1976. He guided it until its demise in 1981, a casualty to the rising cost of publication and distribution. Medical Literary Messenger (VCU University Archives)

The Medical Literary Messenger aims to promote humanism and the healing arts through prose, poetry, and photography. As a web-based journal published twice yearly online, the Medical Literary Messenger is dedicated to the art of medicine and creative expression, and is available to all in a free and open access format. New issues appear on the journal's main web page at and are also archived here. The views expressed in the Medical Literary Messenger are not an official position of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Menorah Review (VCU University Archives)

Menorah Review was a journal dealing with all areas of Judaic culture, published by the Virginia Commonwealth University Center for Judaic Studies in 83 issues, from 1984 to 2015. The journal examined Jewish experience in its varied dimensions, featuring review essays of contemporary books, original articles on Jewish themes, poetry, and annotated "briefings" about books and journal articles. Founding editor Jack D. Spiro, who served as the Harry Lyons Distinguished Chair in Judaic Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University and director of the VCU Center for Judaic Studies, was the journal's editor for its entire run. Issues 1 to 58 were only published in print. From issue 63 to 83, the journal was only published electronically. Print copies of the Review (up to issue 62) are available in Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library.

Ramerican Political Science Review (VCU University Archives)

The Ramerican Political Science Review is an undergraduate journal from the Dept. of Political Science at VCU. The journal accepts work from all of political science’s disciplines, including American Politics, International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Theory and Public Policy. We look for research that addresses pressing political issues and that, therefore, carries substantial normative importance. We also look for research that approaches research questions from theoretically grounded avenues, and for research that seeks to answer the research question in a novel, yet compelling, methodological fashion.
