The VCU Student Media Center (SMC) houses various media outlets managed and produced by students as student media organizations.

We offer opportunities for involvement in a variety of interests, including but not limited to:

Participation in any student media organization is open to all students, regardless of major or class level. If you’re interested in joining one of our student media organizations, email


This student-run literary and art journal publishes student works that discuss or explore topical social issues. Topics include; race, gender, sexuality, mental health, environment, religion, injustice, crime and inequality. Amendment publishes annually in print and also found online.

The Commonwealth Times

The Commonwealth Times, established in 1969, is VCU's award-winning, student-run newspaper. Articles cover news, sports, opinion and culture. Print editions hit campus stands weekly, and online articles are published frequently.

You might remember Pwatem as Poictesme but, did you know the name comes from the fantastical land created by novelist James Branch Cabell? The student-run journal has showcased the literary and artistic works of VCU students for more than a decade. The journal, published annually in print, is also online.
