Software Description: DBMS/COPY is a tool for transferring data between software programs such as spreadsheets, databases, and statistical applications, including SAS, SPSS, JMP, S-Plus, SigmaStat, and Stata. DBMS/COPY directly reads and writes the native binary files of over 80 packages. DBMS/COPY’s interactive ASCII Data Dictionary Builder is useful for working with ASCII files. DBMS/COPY takes care of dissimilar numeric types, date variables, time variables, null value, and variable name truncation. The built-in batch processing can automate repetitive transfers.
DISCLAIMER: DBMS/Copy is an UN-supported program that has NOT been updated since 2008. At one time, it was able to convert data files between many different software programs. However, software data formats tend to change over the years, and there is no guarantee that DBMS/Copy will still be able to reliably convert between them. DBMS/Copy is only being provided here in case it might still be of some assistance in converting between certain types of data formats. But because it is now a defunct program, DBMS/Copy is provided here "as is", with no support from either VCU Technology Services or the vendor, and without warranty or guarantee of its functional accuracy or dependability. Use it at your own discretion and risk.
Cost: No charge
Audience: Students, Faculty and Staff
In 2002, DBMS/Copy was acquired by SAS. SAS discontinued development and support of DBMS/Copy effective November 1, 2008. VCU has a perpetual license for DBMS/Copy; therefore, it will be continued to be distributed to the VCU community until new data formats make it obsolete.
Note: The current release of DBMS/Copy is NOT supported under Microsoft VISTA, Windows 7, and Windows 10.
DBMS/COPY and DBMS/Explorer licenses were obtained under a site license and can only be used on the VCU campus by faculty, staff, and students on VCU owned computers. Copies of DBMS/COPY are available for download.
To download DBMS/Copy, you must complete the license registration and authorization form. The installation and use of DBMS/Copy are restricted to use on the VCU campus. An email with instructions and the serial number will be sent to you.
The DBMS/COPY download file is a self-extracting zip file containing many files. When you double click on install_dbmscopy80.exe, by default, it will extract these files into a directory called C:\dbmscopy8.
To install after extracting:
Select Start, Run
In the Open box enter: C:\dbmscopy8\setup.exe
After downloading DBMS/COPY, a serial number is sent to your @vcu.edu e-mail account.
The first time DBMS/COPY is run, you will be prompted to enter this serial number.
Limited training and support are available for DBMS/Copy due to the age of the application.
Documentation for DBMS/COPY and DBMS/Explorer installs automatically. Manuals can be accessed by selecting the program menu: Help, Manuals On-line.
A PDF version of the dfPower DBMS/Copy 8.0 User's Guide is available on the program Help menu.
If you need assistance with the installation of DBMS/Copy, contact the IT Support Center.
