As of Fall 2019, all centrally supported classroom computers have Kaltura Classroom installed on them for recording classroom lecture content centered around presentation content found locally on the podium computer. Every classroom with a podium, even the standard size classrooms, has a microphone installed on top of the podium that allows for spoken content to be recorded as well. In more advanced systems, audio from wireless microphones, classroom microphones as well as video feeds from cameras can also be captured if the room has these capabilities.
Videos captured on this software can be easily loaded to VCU's Kaltura MediaSpace directly into a user's specific Media Files or even automated to publish to VCU's Learning Management System.
For more information about Kaltura Classroom, please visit our Kaltura Classroom (Software Capture) website.
While limited in deployment, there are some centrally supported classrooms that have a hardware appliance installed. The main difference between hardware and software capture solutions involves the ability to record sources that are not on the computer such as laptops and other auxiliary devices, or recording software that would require the simultaneous use of resources on the computer (such as microphones and cameras). In most spaces, these appliances are owned by a school or department that has a high volume of classes in the associated room and funds the maintenance and licensing contract for the devices. There are currently two manufacturers associated with capture appliances in our classrooms, Cattura capture appliances, and Echo360. Technology Services' central support for Echo360 hardware capture will be discontinued on June 30, 2020, in favor of the Cattura CaptureCast Appliances, which support publishing to Kaltura. If an echo360 appliance is still available in a central classroom after June 30, 2020, it is owned and supported by the School's technology team listed below.
