National Cancer Institute leader discusses COVID-19 and cancer in Massey’s “Facts and Faith Fridays”

On Friday, January 15, Norman (“Ned”) Sharpless, M.D., director of the National Cancer Institute, joined "Facts and Faith Fridays" for a virtual discussion on COVID-19 and cancer.

During the public session, Sharpless discussed a variety of issues, including racial disparities in COVID-19 and cancer and the pandemic’s long-term impact on cancer screening, treatment and care.

This Zoom Webinar was co-sponsored by The Governor’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; the Office of Health Equity at the Virginia Department of Health; VCU Massey Cancer Center and faith leaders from Massey’s Facts & Faith Fridays group.

Facts & Faith Fridays began in March 2020 as a weekly call led by Robert Winn, M.D., director of VCU Massey Cancer Center, with African American clergy in Virginia to address the disproportionate impact the pandemic has had on the Black community. The call has evolved to address higher rates of cancer and other health issues in diverse communities and continues to address COVID-19. The group invited Virginians of all faiths and races to participate in this webinar with Sharpless.

Opening remarks were delivered by Winn; Arthur Kellerman, M.D., M.P.H., CEO, VCU Health System, and senior vice president, VCU Health Sciences; Rudene Mercer Haynes, J.D., partner, Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, and advisor to Facts & Faith Fridays; and Rev. F. Todd Gray, pastor, Fifth Street Baptist Church, and co-founder of Facts & Faith Fridays.

During a Q&A with Sharpless, faith leaders from Facts & Faith Friday asked questions about COVID-19, cancer and the COVID vaccine and how churches can help get reliable health information to their congregants.
