Ghatul Abdul Qayum

Fulbright ETA, 2015, Malaysia

Ghatul is a recipient of the 2015-2016 Fulbright English Teaching Assistant scholarship. She will be teaching English in Malaysia.

Prior to applying for Fulbright, Ghatul volunteered with AmeriCorps and America Reads, where she was exposed to the educational inequalities prevalent in Richmond Public Schools. “This experience further motivated me to seek a career in educational equality for minorities, especially women, globally” says Ghatul.

Ghatul received help from the NSO while applying for the Fulbright and says, “The (NSO) process was also extremely helpful in clarifying my thoughts on paper. NSO staff were always available to answer my questions at all hours of the day using any medium; skype, phone, email, and in person.”

She views her experiences growing up in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime with no access to education as an asset that she will draw upon during her ETA. She has a passion for overcoming differences of race, religion, culture, background, and gender to promote cultural understanding. After her stay in Malaysia, she hopes to work in education advocacy and human rights arenas.
