Acceptable Losses? COVID-19—Social Equity and the African-American Community (Part 1 of a 4-Part Series)

Thursday, April 16 | 4 p.m. ET | REGISTER HERE

African-Americans are dying at alarming rates from the coronavirus pandemic. In Chicago, 70 percent of the deaths have been among African-Americans, while they constitute only 30 percent of the population. Similar data patterns are occurring across the United States. While this is appalling and needs to be addressed, will it be? What policies, processes and systems need to be corrected to do so?

This webinar is the first in a four-part series co-hosted by ASPA and Virginia Commonwealth University's L. Douglas Wilder School and will examine social equity and the coronavirus pandemic, with a specific focus on the African-American community. Important questions we'll address include:

  • What are the death rates and what can be done now to mitigate these losses?
  • Are African-Americans and other vulnerable populations "acceptable losses" during this global pandemic?
  • Will we stand behind the phrase "we're all in this together?"

Join us next Thursday, April 16, to hear from this distinguished panel and pose your own questions and discussion items.

Presenters:

Curtis Brown, Co-Founder and COO, Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management

Susan T. Gooden (Moderator), Interim Dean and Professor, L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, Virginia Commonwealth University

William Spriggs, Chief Economist, AFL-CIO
