Rising senior Sidra Sharieff’s ultimate ambition is to end human trafficking in the Middle East. She is working towards that goal by pursuing a major in International Studies with a Social Justice concentration as well as a double minor in Psychology and Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies.

Sharieff has always been passionate about travel and interacting with other cultures in part because of her own background as a Muslim-American. She values the School of World Studies’ focus on communicating across cultures, fostering empathy and exploring “the human side of global politics." At the 2018 Student Research Conference (pictured below), Sharieff explored all these concepts in her paper, "Mental Health within the Muslim Community."

This coming summer, Sharieff will expand her cross-cultural fluency by studying abroad in Morocco. This experience will help with her post-graduation plans to work with refugees in the Middle East and particularly to address the ongoing crisis in Yemen.Rising senior Sidra [View Image]

Sharieff had already decided on her major when she enrolled at VCU and now feels “very at home” in the School of World Studies. She cites the passion of her professors as inspiring and motivating her to explore how policy can reflect humane ethics.
