Get started

Welcome to VCU! You may be the first in your family to attend — and graduate — from a four-year college or university, but you’re not alone. In fact, thousands of us at VCU are or were first-generation students! You First at VCU is here to help you get connected to other first-generation students, as well as the academic and social resources you need to help you achieve your goals.

For students

Here are some first steps to take if you’re new to VCU or simply new to learning about the resources VCU has to offer for first-gen students.

For parents and families

We understand that parents and family members want to help, too. Here are some things they can do to better understand their student’s VCU experience and support them during the journey.
