Jennifer Lawhorne

Fulbright, 2015, Italy

Jennifer Lawhorne, from Woodbridge, Va., received her bachelor’s of science degree in mass communications from VCU in 2001. She then received her master’s of science degree in cinema studies and language from VCU in 2013. VCU's Transatlantic Dual Degree in Cinema Studies and Language afforded Lawhorne the opportunity to study in Spain and Italy for a year. With the support of her Fulbright grant, she will conduct community-based research in Messina, Italy, working with immigrant populations to use film as a way to share their stories of integration. Simultaneously, Lawhorne will research and interview Virginia Onorato, a filmmaker whose work with factory workers in northern Italy in the 1960s inspired Lawhorne’s project. These two research initiatives will come together in the summer of 2016 when a film festival in Messina will be held in Ms. Onorato's honor. Upon returning to the U.S., Lawhorne plans to pursue a university faculty position and use her Fulbright experience to strengthen the field of participatory filmmaking.
