When Julie Charbonnier received her Fulbright award, it felt like a long time coming.
Charbonnier, a master's student studying amphibian ecology here at VCU, applied to Fulbright twice before receiving the scholarship in 2012. With the funding and support Fulbright provides, she will now be able to spend a year in southern Spain studying the effects of climate change on amphibians in Do?ana National Park.
For Charbonnier, the application process itself was rewarding. The first time she applied, she made it to the first round of the competition, but did not receive the award.
However, Charbonnier said that the positive feedback she received from the National Scholarship Office inspired her to reapply the following year. She said it made her feel more comfortable in interviews and that it also helped her gain confidence in her studies.
Originally from Philadelphia and previously an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, Charbonnier has also won a National Science Foundation Scholarship.
