Pre-health advising

VCU offers four pre-health baccalaureate programs, which prepare students for competitive admission into nursing, clinical laboratory sciences, radiation sciences or dental hygiene.

Students interested in earning a bachelor’s degree one of these programs may declare pre-nursing, pre-clinical laboratory sciences, pre-clinical radiation sciences or pre-dental hygiene either as their primary major or as a dual major.

University Academic Advising helps students navigate pre-health program admission requirements, while also supporting their career exploration into parallel majors.

Once a student applies and is admitted into the professional health major, their pre-major is changed to the new major.  If they are not successful in their admission, they will remain a pre-major until they either apply again in a future semester, or decide to declare a new major.

Declaring a pre-health major

  1. Submit a change of major form to declare.
  2. You will receive an email inviting you to complete a mandatory online orientation on Blackboard.
  3. When you have completed the orientation module on Blackboard, please email prehealthadv@vcu.edu indicating it is complete.
  4. Once Pre-Health Advising receives your email and verifies that the module has been completed your request will be processed.

Students interested in the Accelerated Nursing or RN to B.S. programs are encouraged to attend an information session to learn about admission requirements. Contact VCU_Nurse@vcu.edu or (804) 828-5171 for details.
