Civic Engagement

The Office of Student Leadership & Civic Engagement creates purposeful experiences and resources that engage students to become active citizen leaders in the local, national, and international community. We promote mutually beneficial partnerships with these communities to connect students, including organizations, leaders, and employees.

Alternative Break Program

The Alternative Break Program coordinates national and international service learning experiences for students through Alternative Spring Breaks, Alternative Summer Breaks, and Alternative Weekend Breaks.

Alt Breaks are student lead trips where participants can leave behind the world of laboratories and classrooms and learn alongside communities addressing issues like urban poverty, racism, hunger, inadequate housing, and environmental damage. Alt Breaks participants are able to contribute their hard work toward community identified needs, and our national and international partners benefit from the tangible work completed. Alternative Breaks are a great way for students to get involved with community service, explore new and discover their role as global citizens. Days of Service

MLK Day of Service: Honor the legacy of Dr. King by participating in a national day of service. The next MLK Day of Service will take place on Jan. 18, 2021. Visit RamsConnect for details and registration information.

The Big Event: The Big Event at VCU is a one-day, student-run service project where Rams come together to say “Thank You” to the residents of Richmond. This new VCU tradition shows student appreciation to the surrounding community through service projects such as yard work, window washing and painting for residents of the community. We share in the mission of similar programs throughout the nation - "One Big Help, One Big Thanks." For more information, visit The Big Event website on RamsConnect, click here.

VCU Votes Student Coalition

VCU Votes Student Coalition is a network of VCU students, faculty and staff members dedicated to promoting voter engagement on campus. The VCU Votes Student Coalition coordinates campus-wide voter engagement events, provides voter education, and works to make VCU the most voter-friendly campus it can be.
