Our International Studies Program uses an interdisciplinary approach to examining global issues in order to foster engaged world citizens equipped with communication skills and intercultural perspectives. Our coursework helps students understand, diversify, connect and respect different cultures from around the world. We take a grassroots approach to global issues in order to foster the genuine empathy needed to work with a community.
Both the International Studies major and minor build upon the study of a language while our B.A. concentrations focus on geography, themes and issues. Please note that majors must demonstrate at least a second year college level proficiency in a foreign language. If you’ve already completed this requirement, consider building upon your language skills with an International Studies B.A..

The International Studies program prepares the next generation of civic and global leaders. By gaining direct experience in activism and empowerment, our graduates are prepared for work in the non-profit and public sectors. As our economy becomes increasingly globalized, the cross-cultural and communication skills we impart on our students are invaluable in many fields, but especially government, business, marketing and management. See our testimonials for more information.
Furthermore, the School of World Studies’ focus on experiential learning through opportunities like study abroad helps students bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world, demonstrating professional aptitude to future employers.
Our Academic Advising team is here to personally guide students in shaping and achieving their goals at VCU and beyond.
