The Library Buildings Fund, established in 2015 as part of the most recent university capital campaign, supports the needs of students, faculty and researchers by providing enhanced spaces for study, collaboration and collections. A library building is never truly finished as it must evolve with needs and technology. Today, named spaces are available at every giving level. Additional opportunities for philanthropic support are:
The sod lawn installed in front of Cabell Library, the last step in 2016 construction to meet minimal landscape requirements, has become an active gathering place for students. This “green commons” on the urban VCU campus is filled with social activities and play. Unfortunately, this lawn cannot support such intense use. In keeping with the spirit of the new building’s LEED Silver Certification, VCU Libraries seeks to create a native plant garden to enhance and sustain the grass lawn. The vision includes seating, an open grass area with irrigation to help preserve the “green commons” and the planting of trees and shrubs that thrive in Virginia and, therefore, require little maintenance. Sculpture throughout the garden will help define the space and will make the garden as iconic as the building. The new landscaping will provide respite from VCU’s predominantly paved urban landscape.
The more than 50 group study rooms are often full around-the-clock. Because of the rooms’ popularity, furnishings, white boards, paint and carpeting deteriorate quickly. Your gift can help upgrade these rooms to contemporary standards, reviving worn-out spaces and, in some cases, completely overhauling rooms that have not been updated for years.
The library on the MCV campus is a central gathering space that is essential to the academic life of the five health sciences programs--Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Allied Health Professions. While a future new library is part of the university’s Master Plan, the need for continuouly improving library spaces is ongoing. Immediate plans include updated spaces to provide high-tech Workshop-like materials and equipment on the MCV Campus; power to the carrels in Stacks A-F; updated carrels and lighting in the lower level; updated lighting and replacement of ceiling tiles in basement work areas; and the purchase and installation of compact shelving to shift space from collections to users.
Gallery spaces within the buildings will showcase student, faculty and alumni work and will give visitors opportunities for inspiration and reflection.
We gratefully accept unrestricted gifts and pledges, in any amount. See details on new spaces and floor maps.
