Cancer Research and Resource Centers
Serving Southern Virginia since 2010, the Cancer Research and Resource Centers (CRRCs) function in two respects. As research centers, staff work with researchers at state universities to bring research studies to those living in our communities. As resource centers we provide up-to-date and helpful information on cancer risk reduction, as well as help cut through the clutter and fear of a very stressful diagnosis by directing cancer patients, survivors and their networks of support to reliable sources. The CRRCs two offices, one in Danville and one in Lawrenceville, are both located along the State Highway 58 corridor. They are outreach offices of the Office of Health Equity and Disparities Research within and funded by Massey.
- About
You may call or stop by our welcoming offices to:
- Obtain sound information about cancer screening, diagnoses, treatment options, diet, exercise and stress management;
- Find help with financial or transportation assistance and support services from peer-to-peer networks to hospice;
- Learn about the importance of knowing your family’s health/cancer history and getting screened for cancer.
Our staff is also very active outside the office walls. We host events throughout the area, recruiting both nationally known speakers and local medical professionals. Continuing education credits are often offered as part of
In addition to Living Well programs for people concerned with cancer prevention and survivorship, the Danville center's main initiatives right now are to:
- Emphasize the power of detecting and treating cancer in its early stages;
- Encourage everyone to get screened for colon cancer at the age of 45 (ACS) or younger if you are at greater risk;
- Encourage everyone to get screened for cervical cancer & HPV at age 25 (ACS) and raise awareness about the human papillomavirus (HPV), its connection to male and female cancers and the HPV vaccine; and
- Work to reduce illness and death from lung cancer through education and support of tobacco cessation efforts.
In Lawrenceville, advancements are being made to:
- Work with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Coaches Program to address, understand and improve the health factors within the community that contribute to higher cancer incidence and mortality rates;
- Work to reduce illness and death from lung cancer through education and support of tobacco cessation efforts;
- Encourage everyone to get screened for colon cancer at the age of 45 (ACS guideline/2018) or younger if you are at greater risk; and
- Support individuals one-on-one by providing information about a cancer diagnosis, assisting with access to care and connecting survivors and caregivers with the resources they need.
All of our programs and services are complimentary. Please feel free to call, contact us by e-mail or follow us on Facebook.
- Mission
Our mission is to establish, facilitate, maintain and actively engage with the communities of Southside Virginia to improve the health and wellbeing of community residents, as it relates to cancer, with the goal to advance cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship. As part of the Office of Health Equity and Disparities Research, we work to address cancer disparities through research, outreach, education and training.
Our goals are
- To establish sustained community engagement that fosters ongoing dialogue and collaboration across the cancer care continuum relevant to the local context and the broader community;
- To effectively serve the Southside communities and individuals with reliable local, state and national cancer information, resources and programming that is applicable to the local context and that results in an improvement of outcomes for those residents diagnosed with cancer and be a resource for family members and caregivers;
- To establish and maintain an atmosphere of trust in Southside communities that fosters open conversation about cancer research and community engagement in cancer studies and research activities focused on biological, clinical and social determinants of cancer disparities; and
- To improve the quality of life of Southside residents by offering opportunities to increase study participation of minority and underserved groups.
- Locations
The two Cancer Research and Resource Center offices are located in Danville and Lawrenceville, both along the State Highway 58 corridor.
