Research description

The laboratory is interested in the developmental regulation of genes and in increasing gamma-globin as a strategy to treat sickle cell anemia and beta-thalassemia. Our lab is examining the roles of various DNA-binding proteins in repressing the gamma-globin gene in adult erythroid cells. Inhibiting these repressors could increase gamma-globin. Much of my current work stems from training the next generation of scientists, especially those from diverse backgrounds. I am PI on three NIH/NIGMS research training grants, which provide research opportunities for undergraduates, postbaccalaureate scholars, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows. Many of the 30+ trainees work on cancer-related research.
