We are studying how levels of sphingolipids are regulated. Sphingolipids are a class of lipids that have diverse functions in biology, including structural roles in membranes and as signaling molecules. Some members of this family of lipids promote proliferation and some promote cell death, both processes crucial to cancer biology. We hope that through a detailed understanding of how these levels are regulated, we will be able to design therapeutic approaches that alter metabolism to promote the death of cancer cells.
