Metastasis accounts for the vast majority of cancer-associated deaths, and emerging evidence places metastasis under metabolic control. Mitochondria are the major metabolic factories within cells, but they more than just a powerhouse; they also play an active role in modulating several metabolic processes involved in tumor metastasis. What remains to be understood are the mechanisms responsible for transmitting those signals in mitochondria. Our lab has shown that mitochondrial (mt) DNA (mtDNA) is modified by cytosine methylation, and these marks represent a powerful strategy for regulating mt gene expression in response to environmental cues. My laboratory's research aims to provide a direct connection between aberrant mtDNA methylation and the mt dysfunction associated with cancer metastasis.
