The most prominent cancer-related study that I am currently involved with is the characterization of lipid droplet accumulation in histologic subtypes of endometrial carcinomas. This is a multicenter collaboration with Dr. Britton Trabert at the National Cancer Institute. Our role at VCU includes providing the histotechnology enterprise and support as well as to advise on matters such as tissue processing, stain validations and protocols, and result interpretation. Other smaller ongoing cancer-related projects, mainly of a description nature but have the potential to expand, include topics such as metastatic meningiomas, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in metastatic lung cancer to the brain, and effects of lymphoma treatment on the retina. A report of an interesting case of metastatic meningioma was recently published and there are plans to expand this project to include these extremely rare cases from other institutions. Finally, I have collaborations with other members of my department on projects involving the histopathologic diagnosis of cancer and digital pathology.
