Research description

My research focuses on helping primary care practices better deliver preventive care. Studies include: 1) Promoting team based care to improve delivery of preventive services, 2) Understanding factors that influence uptake of new guidelines, 3) Using information technology to better engage patients in care, 4) Using conversation aids to promote shared decision-making, 5) Feasible primary care interventions to counsel patients about weight loss, 6) Addressing social risks in healthcare, and 7) Understanding a primary care center's capacity to care for new Medicaid beneficiaries. I am the director of the Virginia Ambulatory Care Outcomes Research Network (ACORN), a collection of over 500 primary care practices throughout Virginia that collaborate on research that matters to primary care. I am also a member and vice chair of the U.S Preventive Services Task Force.
