Summer camps for students

HomeCommunity engagement

UPDATED 3/31/2021
Safety is our priority for students that attend a camp or any other activity at Rice Rivers Center. We continue to consult with VCU leadership and follow state guidelines about in-person activities.  At this time, we are planning to provide these popular camps this summer, and registration is now open.  As we receive more instruction and information, we will update this page.  If you have any questions, please contact David Hofler at hoplerjrda@vcu.edu

The VCU Rice Rivers Center offers summer field courses for middle and high school students.

Go Fish! - 2021

Students will learn about fishing, fish biology and aquatic ecosystems in this exciting, week-long day camp. Students will get a chance to cast lures for smallmouth and largemouth bass, stalk wily fish in clear, cool forested streams and angle for a chance at doing battle with bluefish or striped bass. All fishing tackle is provided.  Open to rising 6th grade through rising 9th grade students.

Dates: August 2 - 6, 2021 (subject to local and state COVID-19 guidelines)

This full-day course begins each day at 8:30 to 9 a.m. and ends at 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The saltwater fishing day on Thursday is generally longer. Students must be dropped off and picked up each day from the VCU Monroe Park Campus in Richmond, Virginia. Students are required to bring lunch each day and dress appropriately for field activities. All other course materials and supplies are provided. Courses will include classroom activities on days when inclement weather prevents field outings.

Go Fish! Advanced Class - 2021

This advanced class this summer is for older and more experienced campers. This class will have a smaller enrollment than our regular Go Fish week. The small class size will allow for more diverse fishing destinations. In addition to our most popular destinations, students will get a chance to fish for mountain trout and a variety of saltwater species. All gear is provided. Open to rising 9th graders and older.

Dates: July 26 - 30, 2021 (subject to local and state COVID-19 guidelines)
