Carrie Hartwell, Ph.D., LCSW, is a VCU School of Social Work teaching faculty member and licensed clinician specializing in direct social work practice with diverse populations. Dr. Hartwell holds a dual doctorate in social work and psychology from the University of Michigan and master’s degrees in both fields, in addition to a master’s certificate in refugee trauma and global mental health from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Hartwell's primary interests and areas of expertise include trauma, traumatic brain injury, anxiety and mood disorders, and risk and resiliency among refugees, survivors of human trafficking, and other migrant populations.  She has over 21 years of experience as a mental health practitioner in the U.S. and abroad and has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in direct social work clinical practice, lifespan development, community-based research, and field work in multicultural societies.

She also consults with community health care organizations and provides training on mental health, empathy, and diversity, and she is proud to serve members of the LGBTQIA+ community both in her practice and in volunteer capacities.

Teaching areas and interests

Dr. Hartwell currently teaches the foundation clinical courses in the M.S.W. program: Direct Social Work Practice with Individuals, Families, and Groups I and II, as well as Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Disorders. She also serves as the Course Lead for these three courses and is currently developing their new curricula for the Online M.S.W. Program redesign that was launched in fall 2019.

Over the course of her career, she has also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in direct social work clinical practice, psychology, lifespan development, community-based research, and field work in multicultural societies.
