Mauricio P. Yabar, LCSW, M.Ed., CST, is a doctoral student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. He is a licensed clinical social worker and AASECT-certified sex therapist with extensive practice experience providing services to sexually-diverse populations. He draws on social constructivism and narrative theory to inform his clinical work and research. Yabar is interested in the experiences of families of youth who sexually offend; particularly, the effects of social stigma and other collateral consequences of the offense on family functioning. His research also involves understanding the impact of childhood adversity, specifically homophobic bullying, on relational and sexual behavior patterns of gay and bisexual men. Through his research, he hopes to inform therapeutic services for stigmatized sexual minority populations.
Yabar’s research interests are influenced by his previous training in human sexuality and apprenticeship experience in narrative theory and practice. Prior to the doctoral program, Yabar worked as a therapist in Denver and in non-profit agencies, hospital settings and private practice. He was an adjunct instructor at the University of Denver in the Graduate School of Social Work and also taught in the online M.S.W. program at Simmons College. Yabar has presented his work at conferences in the U.S. and internationally.
Yabar holds a Master of Clinical Social Work (M.S.W.) and a Master of Human Sexuality (M.Ed.) from Widener University in Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology with minors in health studies and sociology from Montclair State University in New Jersey.
Yabar enjoys traveling with his husband and experiencing different cultures. In addition to his two cats and an adorable pitbull mix, Yabar enjoys running in the rain, taking photos and watching true crime shows.
