This page is to educate students about being safer online and to inform them about policies that will impact their time at VCU. Be sure to check back as we will be adding new content!

 

There are currently 4 different versions of the Did You Know stickers. Collect them all!

  • Did you know you can check phishing.vcu.edu for the latest phishing scams sent to VCU students/staff? You can also forward suspected spam to itsc@vcu.edu
  • Did you know scammers may try to send extortion emails to you claiming they have inappropriate footage captured from you webcam? Don’t fall for extortion scams, report it to itsc@vcu.edu.
  • Did you know that you can get free webcam covers from the IT Support Center (ITSC) in Cabell Library?
  • Did you know legitimate organizations will not offer you jobs without a proper interview? Please be aware of job offer scams
  • Did you know VCU offers a free 2 Factor Service to help protect your account from attackers? Find out more at go.vcu.edu/2factor.

  • Did you know longer passwords are much more safer from password guessing or cracking attacks? Try to use a passphrase such as "A straw hat on my fast h0rse!" when setting your next password.
  • Did you know that Gmail to Gmail emails are automatically encrypted? This includes your VCU email.
  • Did you know that the green lock next to a site name in browsers means that your connection is encrypted? This means that if someone was to snoop in on your traffic all they would see is gibberish.
  • Did you know that you should always update your computer with the latest updates? They usually contain security patches that fix vulnerabilities.
  • Did you know that VCU will never ask for your password? Never share your passwords with anyone.
  • Did you know that you could get your Wi-Fi access revoked for pirating illegal content?
  • Did you know that personal routers and switches in VCU dorms are not allowed?
  • Did you know that Wireless printers are forbidden from dorms? Bring a USB cable!
  • Did you know ResNet offers free tech support to all students? Not just residents. You can find a ResNet tech at 809 W. Broad St., Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Did you know that gaming consoles in the dorms will not work over Wi-Fi? Bring an ethernet cable to keep on gaming!
  • Did you know that SafeNet Wireless(20 -200 Mb) is about 4x faster than VCU Guest Wireless (5 Mb)?
  • Did you know that if you are a resident (dorm) of VCU, you can watch free movies on movies.vcu.edu while on campus?

 

 

  • It is illegal to wear slippers past 10 PM in New York
  • Driving with an uncaged bear in Missouri is illegal
  • Crossing the Minnesota state line with a duck on your head is illegal
  • Photographing rabbits from January to April with out a permit is illegal
  • In Oregon it is illegal to go hunting in a cemetery
  • In South Carolina Horses may not be kept in bathtubs
  • In Massachusetts it is illegal to own an explosive golf ball
  • In Alabama it is illegal to wear fake mustaches in church
  • In West Virginia it is illegal to whistle underwater

  • It is illegal to purchase, possess, or train bears for the purpose of bear wrestling in Alabama

  • In Arizona, it is illegal to feed garbage to pigs without a permit

  • In Minnesota, it is illegal to host or participate in a game in which participants attempt to capture a greased or oiled pig

  • In Utah, it is illegal to hurl missiles at buses and terminals unless you are an elected peace officer or commercial security personnel
