Technology Glossary
The title of this page is somewhat misleading. We are following the advice of this Chinese proverb:
Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
So with this proverb in mind, we decided that it would be better to use the power of the Internet to assist you with finding the meaning to technology terms since Internet search is a skill we all can benefit from. To that end we have two suggestions:
- Should you have a question about what a VCU-related technology term means such as Banner or ImageNow, we suggest you use the search box in the gold stripe at the top of each VCU Technology Services webpage. Many of our services and tools have their Knowledge Base articles that outline what the tool or services do and how to use it. This will give you much better information than a brief glossary entry could.
- If you are searching for a general computing term such as WI-FI, hexadecimal code, or CDMA, we suggest you use the ISP Webopedia, which does a great job of breaking down computer terms and concepts into easy to understand chunks of information. For more in-depth explanations, you might want to visit Wikipedia, which contains millions of helpful articles about technology and many other subjects. As with any research, we always recommend that you refer to multiple sources, so a visit to your favorite search engines such as Google, Bing, or Yahoo can provide even more sources of information.
The last bit of search goodness for you is that searching can be an art. It is a tool that has many nuances, so to learn how to best use this tool, we suggest you visit Google's search basics page to learn how to form search queries that will assist you with finding the information you are looking for in the least amount of time. A second article from Google expands on these search basics.
Happy searching!
