Adding a basic VCU search box to your site

With the redesign of the VCU homepage that debuted in October 2009, we introduced a new search page that combines web results and people results in a single page. You can easily add a search box to your own site that will return results using these new VCU search templates.

Combined VCU web & people search

Use the following code to create a search form that will return both web and people results in the VCU template.

<form action="http://www.vcu.edu/search/" method="get">
<input type="hidden" name="proxystylesheet" value="default_frontend">
  <label for="search">Search for:</label>
  <input type="text" name="query" id="search">
  <input type="submit" value="Go">
</form>

Site-specific web search

Use the following code to create a search form that will return web results for your site in the VCU template. You will need to change "www.yourdomain.vcu.edu" in the code below to reflect your website address, but you do not need to include the http:// portion of the address.

<form action="http://search.vcu.edu/search" method="get">
<input type="hidden" name="proxystylesheet" value="default_frontend">
  <input type="hidden" name="sitesearch" value="www.yourdomain.vcu.edu">
  <label for="search">Search for:</label>
  <input type="text" name="q" id="search">
  <input type="submit" value="Go">
</form>

People search

Use the following code to create a search form that will return only people results in the VCU template.

<form action="http://phonebook.vcu.edu/" method="get">
<input type="hidden" name="proxystylesheet" value="default_frontend">
  <label for="search">Search for:</label>
  <input type="text" name="Qname" id="search">
  <input type="submit" value="Go">
</form>

Department-specific people search

Use the following code to create a search form that will return only people results from a specific department in the VCU template. Make sure you add your Department Name in the italicized portion of the code below. (Some hints - a value of "Biology" would return only people in the Biology department, but a value of *bio* would return people in Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology, etc.)

<form action="http://phonebook.vcu.edu/" method="get">
<input type="hidden" name="proxystylesheet" value="default_frontend">
  <input type="hidden" name="Qdepartment" value="DepartmentName">
  <label for="search">Search for:</label>
  <input type="text" name="Qname" id="search">
  <input type="submit" value="Go">
</form>
